The citation noted that "Sheila gave of herself in every way possible, to every person she met along the way. Kindness, honesty, truthfulness, joy, and a sincere and loving nature have been said to be the qualities that best describe Sister Sheila. For her selfless gifts to the students and parishioners of St. Patrick and many other parishes, the Lowell Irish Cultural Committee enthusiastically honors Sister Sheila with the honor of the Anam Cara Award."
Sheila truly loved her Irish culture and in the spirit of Anam Cara, believed that people survive under the shelter of each other.
Sheila’s niece (also called Sheila) and Sister Nancy Simonds accepted the award and accompanying donation to the Sisiters of Notre Dame de Namur. Her niece Sheila spoke of how important her aunt was to her and her family. She said Sheila was her spiritual director. And she sorely misses her. Sister Nancy added some humor by telling a few stories of life with Sheila. Nancy ended with words from a Weston Priory song – "you are ever a part of our lives; all the good you have done will live on in our hearts."
As Sister Sheila would say upon departing, "Love you. God Bless."
