March is fast-moving. Lewis was relentless in direct action. There was always one more swimming pool, movie theatre and lunch counter to address in an always innovative and non-violent way. The one goal was to create an open integrated society.
John Lewis had a special connection with children. What young person wouldn’t love an adult who counseled find a way to get in the way? He told kids to see the inhumanity, build the beloved community and never let this happen again.
Even without reading his books, I would join up on the journey he described by his life– wouldn’t you? The march for freedom continues.
There was an annual journey of remembrance across the bridge in Selma where John Lewis faced down death in 1965. Even this year, sick as he was, John Lewis attended. Representative Barbara Lee was there too, with youth from her district and her grandchildren. She reports that John took the kids aside for a special moment. He passed the torch.
